PROAÑO 112: Continuing the Echoes of the Centennial Celebration

PROAÑO
WITH FROM QUITO TO THE IMBABURA

30-31 January 2010

Luis Carlos Marrero

After three days of hard work, discussions, proposals and dreams, we wanted to delve into the great adventure of visiting the Taita Imbabura. Was on January 30 and Proaño, with its hundred years, invited us to celebrate his birth on earth where "lightened the cross and gave birth to chaquiñán."

It was about 8:00 am and the buses were waiting at the exit the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar and Tambo Real Hotel. We went up to them with the joy that characterized the meeting. From all over came to share minga which had been called / ace. Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico, Cuba, El Salvador, Venezuela, Colombia, USA, Costa Rica, Belgium, Italy, Congo, Costa Rica, Argentina, Bolivia, Panama, Spain, Basque Country, Catalonia and provinces of Ecuador, we come together as a big rainbow. The buses began their walk ...
After three hours and enjoy the natural beauty of the trip, we began to skirt the Lake San Pablo. A voice said: "We're close." Indeed, we begin to contemplate the giant mountain that opened up our pace and challenged us with its impressive greenery. For some, they are already familiar was the sight, for many / as was the first time we watched this great creation of God. We could make the perfect squares that were the fields all around and some clouds that played with the top as if to comb. That image was etched forever in our souls.

buses stopped at the place where we began our climb. We went to the Ceremonial Center Tupatán to conclude with the Community "Company." It was the opening of the place and be held Quechua ritual "kawsaypak Aknay Sumak." We were received / as a group of Indians who were waiting for us, girls and left the road to share with all / as chicha, a typical drink from them afterwards.

Among words of thanks, flushing, shortness of breath and laughing the ceremony began around 11:30 am. We did two rows, one for men and a women and started to walk to the shrine. At the entrance we were given a candle (candle), all of different colors we make in our hands and a booklet with the order and the readings for the ceremony. Upon arrival we were placed in a large circle of rose petals of different colors. The priest Alberto Ascanta M. and their assistants or Yanapak, Alberto and Enrique Ascanta Males began the ceremony, accompanied by a chorus of women called Warmi yuyai.

After several readings and songs in Quechua, and watching everything they did, the wind blew like Pentecost and all / as we were speaking the same language and one mind. It is appreciated by the corn plants in plots and houses, for the unity of the family and the community or Llakta, and of course, for the Centenary of the Bishop of the Indians.

thru
this moment read the text of Sirach 34, 18-26 and the priest had the reflection in the light of this word. In the midst of so much joy when we were impressed that a group of women food tendered land at the foot of the altar. It was the first time for many / as we could see with our eyes, touch with our hands, taste with our mouths and feel with our hearts, ever read the old history books.

officiants thru took part in this food and transported him to a place where they had dug a hole, returned there as an offering to God and Mother Earth had given as from within. It was somewhat surprising and unique.

later with prayers and chants, the priest and officiating Asperger we prepared essences of flowers, the Spirit of God and fell on each Proaño / a of us as and we became one flesh. The community "Company" thanked several people for the support they have given for years, among them François Houtart, friends of the Basque Country and Nelly Arrobo. As a gesture of solidarity was handed over to each of them a blanket handmade by members of this community. Then we ended the ceremony with words of time commitment, solidarity and respect by people of different countries represented there.

A while later, after several days of using the method see, judge and act, it was time to celebrate. An excellent lunch, cooked by people in the region, was shared in community. Another moment in which there were no differences, we were a great mass of people giving thanks to God, and the Taita Imbabura Proaño for this wonderful opportunity.

minga end this celebratory and began our descent. We were leaving behind this large community sheltered by the great Imbabura. He, impetuous, he would say with a smile, drawn from their corn: GO IN PEACE.

So take our buses and headed to Pucahuaico, Training Center of Mission Indians, created by Bishop Leonidas Proaño; place where, by choice, his mortal remains rest. We were located / as in different places to take a break, some learners had the privilege of sharing in the homes of local people. After a bath and some conversation, we were preparing for evening activities: a ceremony dedicated to Proaño in the chapel of the Centre and the Burning of the Castle.

Around seven in the evening we focus on Pucahuaico Park to start our little pilgrimage to the chapel of the Missionary Training Center of Indigenous Peoples. We gave each participant a candle and around from 8:00 pm lit them and started our march. Between songs and slogans like "Proaño live, live, the struggle continues", "Monsignor Proaño shows us the way, giving the whole life for the oppressed" and many more, a huge crowd was joining us on the road and together / as we build new bridges of solidarity. We

Center, the crowd piled all over and we spent so tightly to the chapel. The place was decorated with wreaths dedicated to Bishop and center on the floor, an offering of bread and flowers. Nelly's sister yachak Arrobo presented to lead us through their words in tune with the spirit of Proaño and indigenous spirituality. In the midst of this bright celebration, we received the news of the bombing of an Embera community in Colombia by a helicopter from the Colombian Army's XVII company .. Our voices of indignation arose, and in solidarity with our brother Emberá participating with us / as we wrote a document of protest against such a brutal act. Our sister Nelly suggested that the offerings of the celebration that night and the next day's Mass was dedicated to that community. The vote was unanimous, approved by consensus.

After the ceremony, shared by all / as the bread that was in the offering. It was an act that brought us together more as a group and siblings in the same case: we learned the true meaning of SUMAK KAWSAY.

We left the room to the patio. Began a new experience for many / as: The Burning of the Castle. It was something we had seen on television, but having before our eyes was something bright. So many lights and colors, accompanied by a brass band, was something momentous.

All / as we were rejoicing / as of this magnificent spectacle and our biggest surprise was seeing a picture of Bishop within the Castle. A God and our / as siblings thanks for this beautiful event.

ended the night with 100 balloons were released into the sky as a tribute and symbol of the Centenary of the Birth of Bishop Leonidas Proaño. With these images we retired to rest, or better written, to dream.

Day 31 began with a delicious breakfast. The proposal was to go towards the Plaza de San Antonio de Ibarra. Upon arrival we expected a band and in the middle of the Square a huge statue of Monsignor Proaño. Also present were Minister of Culture, the Minister for the People and the Rector of the Universidad Andina Simón Bolívar, among others. All those involved said a few words of welcome and joy in order to participate in this tribute. We were surprised by a Mariachi who sang several songs that he liked to Bishop. Some learners could not resist the temptation to dance some steps, our feet were restless.

Over this cultural event, started to walk to the Training Centre. On the way home we passed the Proaño and sister Arrobo Nelly told us of the history of Monsignor. So this way, we were prepared for the Eucharistic celebration, which was chaired by the priest and Belgian sociologist François Houtart.

A immense Coliseum we focus for the mass. All the decoration was alluding to Bishop Proaño. The place was full of phrases from it and the atmosphere was perfect communion. Singing and Bible readings, François led us to an atmosphere of spirituality laureate, marked by our political commitment and faith with the "young children from the Kingdom." At the time of the offertory, some / as siblings of the place, had their food offerings as well as a cake dedicated to Leonidas Proaño. The Eucharist was swift and everyone, Catholic, Protestant, indigenous, lay pastors, priests, partake of the Lord's table. A true oikos, a true flagship of the Kingdom.

After the celebration began Corn Festival. Los / as people / as the place gave us the most exquisite foods. Among corn, chochos, pork, tamales, empanadas, soups and many other varieties, tasted an excellent dish. The atmosphere was alive communion between everyone, the bonds of friendship and commitment grew stronger, the real Shalom of God dwelt among us as well.

Festival After we returned to the Coliseum to enjoy excellent political and cultural show which was shown the great variety of dances from the regions of Ecuador.

At 4.00 pm came the sad news. It was time to leave. Our hearts began to beat very strong. The gorges were tied up and tears out of our eyes. We say not goodbye, but, you soon Siblings.

We took our bus back to Quito. Imbabura we left behind the part of our being. Thank you for calling Bishop. Thanks for showing us the true face of God. Thanks for showing that ANOTHER WORLD IS GOD AND OTHER POSSIBLE.

Bye bye brother hummingbird
